Engineering & Procurement Questions

Custom EMI Shielding FAQs

Answers to practical questions about custom EMI shielding drawings, materials, paid samples, tooling, inspection documents, packaging and quote requirements.

Structure and drawing requirements

Can you manufacture a shield from a product photograph?

A photograph helps describe the structure, but it does not define the thickness, tolerances, base metal, finish or performance requirements. Add the dimensions, application and mating-part information; the drawing and approved sample establish the manufacturing specification.

Can a frame and lid be developed around an existing PCB?

Yes. The review needs the PCB datums, attachment or soldering areas, component height and lid access requirements. Frame attachment and lid engagement are evaluated as connected but separate interfaces.

What if the 2D drawing and 3D model disagree?

Confirm the current revision and governing manufacturing input, then resolve the discrepancy. The sample, order and inspection records should reference that revision, with associated frame, lid and PCB files updated where necessary.

How can I start with a physical sample?

Identify the application, mating components, features that must be retained and changes you want to discuss. A physical outline does not communicate every functional requirement, so supporting assembly information remains useful.

Materials, finishes and process selection

Which material directions can be discussed?

Nickel silver, tinplate, stainless steel, aluminum alloy, zinc alloy and phosphor bronze are available as project discussion directions. The actual grade, thickness, material condition and manufacturing route are reviewed against the structure and use conditions.

Does tin plating or nickel plating fully specify the part?

The base metal, thickness and finish are different inputs. Identify soldering and contact regions and any dimensions or checks that apply in the final treated condition.

Does every one-piece shield use the same process?

A structural name does not determine a single manufacturing route. Material, depth, openings, formed edges, quantities and sample objectives guide the stamping, deep-drawing or sample-route review.

Can a new material use the old sample approval?

Review the forming, soldering, contact, finish and mating requirements affected by the change. Agree the reinspection or new-sample scope before extending the approval to the revised material.

Paid samples and schedules

Are samples charged?

Yes. Sample fees, quantities and manufacturing scope are quoted for the part and confirmed plan. Discuss the objectives and mating parts required for evaluation when requesting the sample.

What are the sample-stage schedules?

Standard samples are 3–5 days, expedited sampling is 48 hours, and tooling with sample production is 7–10 days under the agreed process and sample plan. These schedules exclude volume production and delivery.

Can an expedited sample validate every production requirement?

Define the validation scope first. Forming, surface and fit characteristics affected by the final manufacturing route may require further checks when that process is introduced.

Does sample approval establish the production delivery date?

Volume delivery is reviewed separately against quantity, material, tooling, finish, inspection and packaging. Sample approval provides a controlled part revision for that planning.

Inspection documents and assembly supply

Do ISO certificates prove the shielding performance of a part?

ISO 9001 concerns quality management and ISO 14001 concerns environmental management. A shielding-performance assessment requires the relevant assembled configuration, test conditions, method and acceptance criteria.

Do existing test reports cover every material and product?

Check the reported subject, material or product scope. Identify requirements for a new material, finish combination or project-specific report in the RFQ.

Can every part use the same tape or tray?

Packaging is reviewed against the geometry, mounting features, orientation and supply equipment. Describe manual or automated handling, matched sets, labels and protected areas.

How should I specify the quantity?

List the sample, expected initial batch and future demand separately. Include packaging and target milestones; the final order quantity and delivery arrangements follow quotation and project review.

Inquiries, drawings and confidential information

Which drawing formats can I provide?

STEP/STP, DWG/DXF and PDF files can support the review. Include the units, revision and critical dimensions. PCB and mating-part information helps explain the actual assembly.

Are drawings uploaded by the contact form?

No. The form accepts the drawing or part reference with the project brief. Send the files separately to chinarswj@shieldingcover.com using the same reference so the documents can be matched to the inquiry.

What does a successful form submission mean?

It means the inquiry brief has been recorded by the website. It is not a quotation, order acceptance, sample approval or delivery commitment. The team will review the requirements and respond through the supplied contact details.

How should I share a confidential design?

Discuss the NDA, necessary information and transfer method before sending proprietary files. Share the information needed for the current review rather than unrelated design materials.
